Shawn Porter sees Canela Alvarenz against Terrence Crawford as a “50-50 fight” as Alvarez begins to show signs of wear of a long career. Porter sees the time of fighting perfect for both fighters.
Crawford gets a depleted 34-year-old Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) after the performances for the branches, while the Mexican gets an opponent who will bring a lot of money.
The use of Terrence as an opponent will help Canel generate more PPV purchases and money than he had since his second fight against Gennadiy Golovkin on September 15, 2018.
In addition to the money, it could be another one -sided affair for Canel against the fragile Crawford, who looked older in his narrow victory over Israel Madrid. If that same Crawford appears to fight Canel, he will be embarrassed and fans will feel stupid about buying events.
50-50 Fighting?
“Terrence is already taller than him and has a reach. I tell you, it’s a 50-50 fight,” Shawn Porter told Ring magazines YouTube Talking Channel on Canelo Alvarenz Against Terrence Crawford in September. “It’s actually the perfect moment for both guys.
“Canelo Alvarez loses the fighters against the big names he fights. There is actually no one. Canelo loses fighters with big names against whom they fight. There is actually no one with a big name to fight against,” Porter continued.
“[David] Benavidez deserves that struggle but his status is not at a level that is Canelo [wants]. Somehow forced him with a young child [Edgar Berlanga] that he just got into the ring [on September 14th]. He forced him with Edgar, “Porter said.”
I’m not sure Porter drives it, saying that Benavidez is not in the status he needs to fight Canela. That doesn’t make sense. If John Ryder, Edgar Berlang and Jaime Munguia were good enough for Canelo to hand them manually as opponents, Benavidez is credited.
Obviously, the reason for Canelo considers the fight against the soon 38-year-old Crawford is that Turks al-Sheikh is ready to pay him a wealth to fight.
Canelo probably assumes that Crawford will not be different from the former indisputable junior middleweight champion, Jermell Charlo, when he moved with 154 2023 and was too small and weak to win.
Perfect time
“He is the guy you can make people come to fight, no matter who you are in the ring. The same thing with Terrence. Fighting against Canel Alvarez, who was around the block. Canelo Alvarez who was in a lot of wars, and I think That it’s a perfect time for both guys, “Porter said.
Time is perfect for Canelo to fight financially but not physically. His last two struggles against Edgar Berlang and Jaime Munguia have shown that he is not the same fighter as he used to be and begins to really slow down. Against Berlang, Canelo looked cumbersome and slowly, hit by a fighter who would overthrow 2021 and earlier.
The same goes for Alvarez’s fight against Munguia last May. He came out after four rounds, and the only reason he dominated was how poorly he was protected by Munguia. He couldn’t lick, but he stayed there because Canelo wasn’t the same fighter as he had been years before.
