Gautam Gambhir silences reporter with stunning reply “Yahaan par jo insaan baitha hai…” after BGT disaster
After winning the Test series in the last two tours of Australia, India suffered a 1-3 defeat against the hosts in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Australia were clinical in this series and ensured the series ended on a high in Sydney.
After the loss, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke about the moments when India lost this series. Gambhir also refused to blame any department for the loss as he believes India need to be better in both to be a successful team.

Watch: Gautam Gambhir gives a stunning answer to a reporter
During the post-Test press conference in Sydney, Gautam Gambhir spoke about the moments when India had chances to go ahead in the series. Gambhir also gave a stunning answer to a reporter when asked about the mistakes made by India.
“Gautham, what are the mistakes we made that make us 3-1? Because until you accept that mistakes were made, you can’t improve,” the reporter asked.
Responding to this, Gautam Gambhir said, “Pehli baat toh ye, yahaan par jo insaan baitha hai woh galtiya sabse pehle kubool karega. Toh aap uske liye befikar rahiye ki yahaan pe galtiya kubool nahi ki jayengi.”
(“First, the person sitting here will be the first to admit that mistakes have been made, so you don’t have to worry about us not admitting it.”)
India’s chief coach believes that Australia could have been under a lot more pressure had the Melbourne Test ended in a draw.
“We had our moments in this series where we could have won…the way we started this series, the pink-ball Test match and then we drew (at the Gabba),” Gautam Gambhir stated.
“If you see that last session in Melbourne (Day 5), Australia would have been under a lot more pressure with the series tied at 1-1,” he added.
The fourth test in Melbourne was headed for a draw. However, India suffered a shocking collapse in the last session on Day 5 and lost the match. The men in blue lost seven wickets in the final session with Australia leading 2-1 at the time.
Where did India lose the Sydney Test?
Gautam Gambhir further lamented the opportunity to win the Sydney Test. He feels things would have been a little different if the Indian batsmen had scored well in the second innings.
“There were moments in this match as well. We were leading even after getting all out of 180 in the first innings. If we had batted well in the second innings and given a target of around 250-275, then things could have been different,” he remarked. Gambhir.
“I will not blame any department (batting or bowling). Overall, if we want to play well, we have to be better in all departments,” claimed the former India opener.
India are struggling but Australia are aiming for the win
India were bundled out for just 185 in the first innings of the Sydney Test, but the bowlers came back strongly to dismiss Australia for just 181. India needed to step up their batsmen at this point like they did in the first Test in Perth.
But the batting line-up was unsuccessful and the team could not cope with the power of the Australian bowlers on a spicy pitch. Apart from Rishabh Pant, no other batsman has been able to make a mark when the team needed it.
Pant scored a counter-attacking 61 off just 33 balls and looked the only Indian batsman in the game. Virat Kohli’s poor form continued and ended a very disappointing series for him. India scored just 157 in their second innings and Australia were left with 162 runs to win.
The target was not big and the hosts knew that with only one good partnership they would be in control. Jasorit Bumrah’s unavailability has also not helped India. Australia achieved the target with six wickets in hand and reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
