England has wrongly made ‘Pin-up Girl’ Issy Wong and has to learn lessons, says former coach Mark Robinson | Current news
The World Cup chief coach, Mark Robinson, says “Pin-up girlfriend” Issy Wong was wrongly managed by English with a fast bowlers who was now without affection at international level.
Wong, 20, debuted in England in all three formats in 2022, and then highlighted on marketing material for ashes 2023 at home in Australia.
However, the sailor did not play the game in that series and since then he has struggled with the launch problems, pointed out in the performance against Sri Lanka 17 months ago when she acknowledged 24 driving in two additions and a ball of three legs without legs.
Robinson, speaking while serving as an expert on TNT Sports during this year’s female ash, said: “We pushed her forward without the foundation to wear.
“She was a pin-up girl ECB as a young man, as a child, and then when things got a little heavy, she didn’t have survival tools.”
The 58-year-old, who led England to the World Cup win in 50 years, added: “Issy is going very well and working hard. She is still young at 22 and is fast, so her time will come again.
“It’s something to learn – how to deal with players when we expose them and when to take them out, when to protect them.
“It’s not only from the game, but to protect them from media who sometimes want a piece of them.”
Wong played two T20 International and a one -day international for England in Ireland in September, but it was not part of the ashes team.
The position of the current English coach Jon Lewis is under surveillance after a 16-0 defeat in the ashes, but still considers the best person for work.
Lewis said TNT Sports: “I feel strongly that in this group of players there was still real growth and I really feel that I didn’t finish the job I came here to do.
“Obviously the results did not go the way we want them … but I feel like I’m the right guy who does it.”
Robinson, who left England in 2019 after a 12-4 defeat at home in Australia, insists that Lewis release will not necessarily be a real call, saying: “Sometimes we cheer people out of chances to improve and grow.”
