Farmers Insurance Open: Harris English wins at Torrey Pines for first PGA Tour win since 2021 | Golf news
Harris English held off a charge from Sam Stevens in the final round to claim his first PGA Tour title in 1,308 days with a one-stroke victory at the Farmers Insurance Open.
The overnight leader recovered from two early bogeys to post a one-over 73 in strong winds on the Torrey Pines South course, seeing him finish the week eight under and a shot behind Stevens.
English failed to get up and out of the bunker to save a par at the first and dropped another shot at the par-four fifth, only to bogey the next par-five and finish with 12 straight pars to see off the run.
The fifth PGA Tour title is the Englishman’s first since making an eight-hole playoff at the 2021 Travelers Championship, and the victory moved the American back into the world’s top 50 and secured an invitation to The Masters.
“I may have looked calm out there on the track, but inside your emotions are crazy,” English said. “I just know how hard it is to win. It’s so much fun. You have to absorb it when you’re doing it.”
Stevens started the final day six shots back but raced into contention with four birdies in a front-nine 32, with the American canceling a bogey on the par-five 13th by picking up a stroke on the 17th.
A final-round 68 was the lowest of the day and set the opening club target, with Stevens – who completed several groups before the final pairing – saving par at the last despite finding water with his approach.
English held on for victory with a string of two-putt pars in the final stretch as partner Andrew Novak, who briefly moved ahead after three consecutive birdies from the third, finished two strokes back at third.
Korea’s Sungjae Im finished tied for fourth with Norway’s Kris Ventura and Hayden Springer tied for sixth, while England’s Danny Willett achieved his best finish on the PGA Tour since 2022 after finishing tied for ninth.
Hideki Matsuyama finished the week tied for 32nd and one over, and the world No. 4 is set to return to San Diego next month to defend his Genesis Invitational title at the same venue – he moved from Riviera to Torrey Pines due to the Los Angeles fires .
Halfway leader Ludvig Åberg battled illness in the final two rounds, finishing 11 shots back at three over after failing to find a birdie in his final round 79.
