Henry Bernet: Teens inspired by Roger Federer won the Junior title Australian Open | Tennis news
Henry Bernet, a Swiss player inspired by Roger Federer, gave you an impressive 18th birthday by winning the title of Australian Open for Juniors.
Bernet, who defeated the first leader Jana Kumstat in the quarterfinals and Finn Oskari Paldanius in the semifinals, sealed the title with a 6-3 6-4 win over America Benjamin Willwerth.
The teenager could now follow the footsteps of his compatriots Federer and Stana Wawrinka, who together hold 23 Grand Slama.
Bernet first met with Federer last year at the US Open and practiced it with Wawrinka as the two share the same managerial team.
Bernet, who owns a beautiful one -handed Bekhend, recently announced that he had hired Severina Luthi, a longtime Federer coach, ending his partnership with his current coach Kai Sztenbach.
“I have to thank my coach, this is actually our last trip and I think it is a happy ending we deserve,” Bernet said, receiving his trophy at Laver Arena.
“I wouldn’t stand here without you because you gave me the belief that I could win one of these big tournaments, so thank you very much.”
Bernet also grew up in Basel and represented TC Old Boys Basel, a club where Federer played as a junior.
He joins the long list of celebrity names from Switzerland who won the Junior Grand Slam – including Federer, Wawrinka and Martin Hingis
“It’s an honor to see them interested in my game. That’s my motivation,” Bernet said.
“They have already compared me to Roger, but it’s like, ‘he’s the second world. He plays on the second level, and I’m very far from that.’ But that keeps me motivated.
“I mean, what Roger and the apartment achieved for the land of Switzerland is not normal and this is just an inspiration for us young people.”
He added, “I’d like to talk to him [Federer] again. But I mean, it’s busy anyway. I mean, I’d love to talk to him. But now I don’t expect him. “
