Women’s ashes between Australia and Englandwhere the rain proved to be a blessing for the Australians and a source of disappointment for the English. For England, the loss hit the captain particularly hard Heather Knightwhose frustration was evident as rain interrupted play in the final moments of the match.
A missed opportunity for England
The incident took place as the match entered its climax after a valiant resistance by England’s batsmen brought Australia close to a total of 185 runs in 20 overs. The match was abandoned during England’s earlier series after it rained Manuka oval from Canberra. After the initial showers subsided, the total was revised to 175 runs according to DLS method.
English skipper Knight and Sophia Dunkley had a crucial 4th wicket partnership and added some crucial runs on the board for the visitors. The England captain led from the front and played some emphatic knocks in her 43-run knock against the home side. One such shot hit a boundary on the first ball of the last over in which England needed 18 runs.
However, the rain gods had other plans. Just when it looked like England could score the required runs in the last 5 balls and keep their Ashes chances alive, the rain started to pick up. Australian skipper Tahila McGrath he approached the umpires calling for the game to end as it became difficult to play in the wet outfield. After assessing the whole situation, the referees decided to stop the match and give the decisive victory in the series to the Australians.
Knight’s frustration knew no bounds, shaking her head in rejection and throwing her bat into the air as it landed on the court before she left for Canberra for the last time. Victory seemed close, but in the end rain dampened England’s chances in the match.

Australia is throwing ashes in bags again
The Ashes campaign has been nothing short of a nightmare for England. The team suffered a 3-0 defeat in the ODI series and was defeated by Australia in the first 2 T20Is. England’s hopes of winning the Ashes ended in the third T20I and the one-off Test is now a mere formality between the two nations. This is the sixth time the Australians will bring the Ashes home. England’s last consecutive win in the prestigious bilateral competition was in 2013-14. when they won a Test match and an ODI and a T20I each to win the Ashes.
