Champions Trophy 2025: Suryakumar Yadav responds to his exclusion from the Indian team
In honest confession, Suryakumar Yadavcaptain of the Indian T20I team, responded to his exclusion from the squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025admitting that his unconvincing performances in One Day Internationals (ODIs) were the main reason for his omission.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the first T20I against England on Wednesday (January 22), Suryakumar expressed both disappointment and acceptance of the selectors’ decision.
Suryakumar Yadav admits his poor performance
During the press conference, Suryakumar reflected on his ODI career, in which he scored 773 runs in 37 matches at an average of just 25.76. Despite being a formidable force in T20I cricket, where he boasts a strike rate of 167.86, his transition to the 50-over format has been challenging.
“It hurts me to think that I didn’t do well. If I had done well, I would have stayed there” he said, emphasizing his recognition of the selector’s explanation. When asked if he was hurt by the non-selection, Suryakumar replied, “Why should it hurt? If I had been good, I would have been in the Champions Trophy. If I’m not doing well, it’s important to accept that.” His comments reflect a mature understanding of performance-based selection in professional sports.
SKY support for selected players
Suryakumar also expressed his support for those selected for the Champions Trophy squad, stressing that they deserved their places based on their performances in ODIs and domestic cricket. “The team looks very good. Whoever is there, they are all good performers. They have done relatively well in that format for India,” he added. His remarks point to a team mentality, as he recognizes the importance of meritocracy in selection processes.
Despite being left out of the Champions Trophy squad and the upcoming ODI series against England, Suryakumar remains focused on leading India in the T20I format. He is set to captain the team in the five-match T20I series against England starting at the Eden Gardens on January 22. His leadership will be crucial as India look to build momentum ahead of major tournaments.
Suryakumar also commented on the potential return of the bowler Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami for the Champions Trophy, calling them a “lethal combination” if it suits. Their experience could prove invaluable as Team India looks to regain its status as a dominant force in international cricket.
