Wesley Fofana gives Chelsea a big injury boost after Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia struck

Chelsea centre-back Wesley Fofana has returned to individual training as he bids to return from a hamstring strain injury as soon as possible.

Fofana was not worried at first about the injury he suffered at the beginning of December, but after a period of silence Chelsea fans were shaken by the manager Enzo Maresca’s claim that the central defender could be sidelined for the rest of the season.

This caused a confused reaction from Fofana and prompted additional clarification from the bosswho admitted that Fofana did not agree with the assessment he gave Chelseamedical staff.

As an incentive for Fofana’s quest to return before Marchthe Daily Mail states that he is already back on the turf and participating in individual sessions.

Fofana has been running during training sessions and is on track to return before the end of the campaign, when he could have a battle to reclaim his starting position from returning loanee Trevoh Chalobah.

Injuries are a growing concern for Maresca, who were without defender Levi Colwill and the midfield pair of Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia for a 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. With Chelsea already short on midfield players, there have been calls for the Blues to recall either Andrey Santos or Lesley Ugochukwu from their loan spells at Strasbourg and Southampton.

The Athletic Fernandez is expected to be out for “a couple of weeks at most”, but there are significant concerns about Lavia, who could be out for “much longer”.

Lavia has struggled with injuries since joining Chelsea in 2023. He made just 13 appearances for the Blues in all competitions, missing almost all of last season due to several fitness issues.
