Liverpool vs Lille: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Liverpool need just a point to reach the last 16 of the Champions League when they host Ligue 1 side Lille at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The Reds have been perfect in the competition so far, although they were unlucky to beat Girona in the sixth round last month. Before that, Liverpool beat AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid to confirm their dominant position at the top of the league table.

Arne Slott’s side go into this fight having struck late on at Brentford on Saturday to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to six points after Arsenal were linked to Aston Villa.

They will be tested by a Lille team that is unbeaten in 21 games in all competitions. Bruno Genesi’s team reached third place in France after coming from behind to beat Nice on Friday night, and they currently occupy the last top-8 spot in the European table.

After losing to Sporting CP on matchday one, Lille have won four of their next five – including against Real Madrid – to remain in a strong position. Placement in the round of 16 is far from guaranteed, but their continental campaign will surely extend beyond the end of January.

Here 90 minutes a guide to Liverpool against Lille in Champions League.

Liverpool are heading into their Champions League clash against Lille on Tuesday with Joe Gomez the only confirmed absentee. The centre-back is expected to be out until February with a hamstring injury.

Diogo Jota, whose goal from the bench helped the Reds earn a point at Nottingham Forest, missed Saturday’s win over Brentford with a knock and is now he is unlikely to recover in time for the visit of Lille.

There will certainly be some rotation from Sloto, who hasn’t messed with his team too much so far. The team could include Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo, Jarell Quansah, Kostas Tsimikas, Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott.

Predicted line-up of Liverpool against Lille (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Bradley, Quansah, Van Dijk, Robertson; Endo, Jones; Salah, Elliott, Chiesa; Nunez.

Lille have slightly more injury problems than their hosts, and crucially they are without winger Edon Zhegrova with a muscle problem. Leading scorer Jonathan David will lead the line.

Ethan Mbappe and Nabil Bentaleb are unavailable in midfield, while Tiago Santos has been lost for the season with a knee injury.

Samuel Umtiti has barely featured since joining the club and is still sidelined.

Lille predicted the lineup against Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Chevalier; Meunier, Diakite, Ribeiro, Ismaily; Andre, Bouaddi; Bakker, Cabella, Sahraoui; David.

Lille certainly have a sense of invincibility around them now, but that can quickly disappear in an environment like Anfield.

Genesio’s men have proven that they are not just beneficiaries of a rather weak Ligue 1, with their performances so far in the league stage they show a balanced, well-trained and adaptable team. They like to control ball games, but Genesio will be aware that doing so is very difficult on Merseyside. Expect them to give up territory and target a rotated Liverpool team on the counter.

Slot’s rotation means the Reds probably won’t be as powerful, but they’re hardly short of star reserves. Those coming will want to prove their worth and the Reds should win at home again.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Lille
