Hochul orders flags flown for Trump’s inauguration despite current mourning period for Jimmy Carter


New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, ordered the state’s flags to be flown at full capacity for the inauguration on Monday. President-elect Donald Trump as the nation remains in a period of mourning in honor of former President Jimmy Carter.

“Tomorrow we will all be Americans as we honor the centuries-old tradition of Inauguration Day,” Hochul said in a statement to the New York Post on Sunday.

“For this reason, I am ordering flags to be flown at full staff throughout New York State on January 20th and returned to half-staff to honor the late President Carter on January 21st,” she added. “Regardless of your political views, America’s tradition of peaceful transitions of power is something to be celebrated.”

The governor’s directive comes amid President Biden’s order to fly flags on all government and public buildings and grounds nationwide at half-staff during a 30-day mourning period after Carter’s death December 29, 2024, which happens to include Inauguration Day.

Biden said the American flag “should be flown at half-mast in the White House and on all public buildings and grounds, on all military and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the entire United States and its territories and possessions.”

It is tradition when a former president dies to observe 30 days of mourning and flags to be flown at half-staff.

Hochul joins three Democratic governors — California Governor Gavin NewsomColorado Gov. Jared Polis and Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson — in ordering flags to fly at full staff for Trump’s inauguration before the end of the mourning period on Jan. 28.

Several Republican governors also ordered flags to be flown Monday, including Idaho Gov. Brad Little, North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the governor of Virginia. Glenn Youngkin.

Nearly 30 states will raise their flags Monday for Trump’s inauguration, as well as flags at the U.S. Capitol as ordered by House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Trump publicly condemned the idea that flags could be flown at half-staff for his inauguration after Carter’s death.

“Democrats are all ‘giddy’ over the prospect of our magnificent American flag being ‘half-staffed’ during my inauguration,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Jan. 3. “They think it’s so great, and they’re so happy about it because, They don’t really love our country, they only care about themselves.”

“Look at what they’ve done to our once GREAT America in the past four years – It’s a total mess! Anyway, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the flag can, for the first time ever, be at half-mast during the inauguration of a future president,” he continued. . “No one wants to see this and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Flags were flown at half-staff when former President Nixon was sworn in for his second term in 1973 after Nixon ordered the flags to be lowered following the death of former President Truman.
