Rohit Sharma expresses his dream of bringing World Cup glory to the iconic Wankhede Stadium
The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, a place etched in the history of Indian cricket, celebrated its golden jubilee with a grand event organized by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Sunday.
The evening saw a star-studded gathering of cricketing legends, including the Indian captain Rohit Sharmawho shared his heartfelt dreams and aspirations for the stadium and the future of Indian cricket.
Rohit Sharma’s dream: to bring the World Cup to the Wankhede
The Wankhede Stadium, synonymous with some of the most unforgettable moments in cricket, has witnessed legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkarand now Rohit is creating history. For Rohit, the stadium has a deep emotional connection, having grown up playing cricket within its confines.
During the event, Rohit shared his long-held dream of bringing the World Cup trophy to the Wankhede, a sentiment rooted in past triumphs. He recalled his dream of bringing the T20 World Cup to the Wankhede, inspired by the 2007 win. South Africa.
Reflecting on the 2024 T20I World Cup victory, he mentioned that he was stuck in Barbados for three days due to a storm and tornado during which the Indian team discussed their plans to return to India and what to do next when they return home.
“In 2007, when we came back after winning the T20I World Cup in South Africa, I had a small dream to bring the World Cup here one day. When we won the World Cup, I remember we were in Barbados. We were stuck there for three days due to a storm and a tornado. We planned what we would do when we got back to Indiaa,” Rohit said at the event.

Celebrating past triumphs and looking to future glory
Rohit further revealed that the team is planning to visit Delhi to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi but they weren’t sure what would come next. He expressed his desire to bring the 2024 World Cup to the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, as the previous World Cup celebrations in 2007 and 2011 were also held there, a continuation of the tradition is significant.
“The plan to go to Delhi is decided, but what after that? Nobody knew anything. I wanted the World Cup to come to the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. We recently won three world championships. When we won in 2007 and 2011, the celebration was held at the Wankhede. It was also important to bring 2024 here,” he added.
Eyes on the 2025 Champions Trophy
Rohit also spoke about the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 which will be held in a hybrid format Pakistan and UAE from February 19 to March 9. He expressed confidence in the support of 140 million Indians and promised to do his best to bring the Champions Trophy to the Wankhede Stadium.
“We will do our best… I am sure the wishes of 140 million Indians will be behind us when we land in Dubai for the Champions Trophy. We will try to do well and bring the 2025 Champions Trophy to the Wankhede Stadium,” concluded the captain of the Indian team.
