Man Utd suffered a 3-1 defeat at Brighton as Onana’s error compounded the misery | Football news

Andre Onana’s roar sealed United’s home defeat as struggling Spurs suffer yet another defeat at the hands of Everton in Premier League football.

Manchester United’s season fell further into turmoil after Defeat at home 3-1 in Brighton in the Premier League.

United suffered a miserable defeat after goals from Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter at Old Trafford on Sunday, handing United their 10th defeat in the league.

Bruno Fernandes scored for United from the penalty spot, but the hosts were not helped by howling goalkeeper Andre Onana, who routinely spilled a low cross into the box, allowing Rutter to pounce on the loose ball.

It was the seventh defeat in 15 games under new head coach Ruben Amorim and highlighted the huge task the Portuguese coach has on his hands to revive England’s record 20-time champions.

Brighton climbed to ninth place with 34 points, four points behind the top four. United are 13th out of 26, also from 22 games.

Brighton have won six of their last seven league games with United and their last three away games at Old Trafford.

The teams led the bagpipes in memory of club legend Denis Law, who passed away this week, and former manager Alex Ferguson laid a wreath in the center circle.

Brighton took the lead inside five minutes when Mitoma sprung the offside trap from the left with Carlos Baleba’s long ball and his pass across goal set up a simple finish for the unmarked Minteh.

United won a penalty midway through the first half when Brighton tried to clear the ball out of defence, but goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s pass was poor and the ball fell to Joshua Zirkzee in the box.

Baleba put his hand on the shoulder of the attacker who fell to the ground. Referee Peter Bankes pointed to the spot, and Fernandes had no problem putting the ball in and leveling the score.

Brighton thought they were back in front seven minutes into the second period when United failed to clear a low free-kick into the box and Pedro finished. But a VAR check showed that Jan Paul van Hecke had kicked Diogo Dalot’s leg in the melee.

However, the visitors got a second on the hour mark when Mitoma stretched at the back post in front of United defender Noussair Mazraoui to turn in Minteh’s inviting cross.

Brighton then grabbed a third goal thanks to Onana’s horrendous error to make the game safe and leave United contemplating their 10th league defeat.

On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur’s miserable campaign also sank to new depths with a 3-2 defeat at relegation-fighting Everton. But Nottingham Forest’s improbable title challenge goes from strength to strength after a 3-2 win against bottom-placed Southampton.
