Inquiry from the Spurs box to sign a contract with Werner, who is a “big” star
The Tottenham Hotspur strikers in the Premier League in the current part of the season have worked well. Brennan Johnson has seven goals and two assists, and Dejan Kuluševski has nine goals and assists, he showed excellent quality outside of the goals as well.
Heung Min-son put up some decent numbers, with 12 hitsbut it was sometimes insufficiently desired. Dominic Solanke showed flashes of brilliance, with ten goals and an assistand he seems ready to hit the purple patch at any moment.
However, one striker who has not lived up to the standard expected of him has Timo Werner.
Werner’s disappointing form this season
This was a really disappointing season for the German representative Werner. After joining on loan from RB Leipzig last January, the Lilywhites have extended their contract to keep the striker at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until the end of the seasonwith an option to buy him back for £8.5m.
However, he really impressed with his performances. In 26 performances in all competitions, the winger has one goal and three assists, his only goal coming in a 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Manchester City in October.
Perhaps the German’s worst performance this season was in the 3rd round of the FA Cup against Tamworth from the National League. He squandered several chances in a game that the Spurs only won in overtime and was rated 4/10 by The Standard reporter Dom Smith.
Former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was critical of the winger during the season. In an interview with talkSPORTthe legendary manager said Werner “doesn’t excite me” after the defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion earlier in the season.
Spurs certainly need something extra in attack, given Werner’s poor performances. They have recently been linked with a Premier League star who could add a little more dynamism to the attack.
Spurs target Premier League striker
The player in question is a Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho. According to a report by Football TransfersThe Lilywhites have ‘set their sights’ on the Argentine and have ‘made a specific enquiry’ about a deal that could cost them more than £60million.
This would be a fantastic coup for north Londoners. Garnacho is one of the top talents in world football, as he shows his nomination for the 2024 Golden Boy Award. His United record is already impressive, with 23 goals and 14 assists in 117 games for the Red Devils.
The winger has proven that he can be a big player as well. He scored in the 2023/24 FA Cup final. against Man City, in which United won 2-0, and followed that up with another goal against the same opponents in the 2024 Community Shield.
This year, he comfortably outscored Werner in all competitions. The United winger has eight goals and five assists in 31 games until now in 2024/25. However, some key ones statistics on FBref also suggest the Argentine is an upgrade on the Spurs star.
Over the past two seasons, including Werner’s few months at Leipzig last term, Garnacho has led in several key metrics. For example, he averaged more shot-making actions per 90 minutes, with 3.83 compared to Werner’s 3.54. As football statistician Staman Dave saidhe is a “chance magnet”, as these statistics perfectly show.
Also a “massive” talent in the eyes of Sky presenter Joe Tomlinsonoff the ball, the United star also has some impressive stats, which far exceed Werner’s numbers. The Argentine winger averages 1.51 tackles and interceptions and 4.22 turnovers per game, compared to 1.18 tackles and interceptions and 3.08 turnovers for Werner.

Stats suggest that Garnacho is an upgrade on Werner for Spurs if a deal is possible, as he provides more quality in the upper half of the pitch every 90. He also has a good age profile, only 20 years old, and is a dynamic striker who likes to attack defenders.
If this is the deal the Lilywhites have to make, they would have their perfect replacement for Werner and a player who still has time to develop under Postecoglou’s manager.
