The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is being prepared for the inaugural edition Bangladesh Women’s Premier League (W-BPL)which will take place from February 8 to 15, 2025, after the end of the current men’s competition Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The tournament will feature three teams, with each team playing the other twice in a total of six league matches before culminating in the final.
The composition for BPL women
Speculation about the nature and manner in which the W-BPL will be implemented has been ongoing for some time. However, it is only now that the cricketing community finally has an idea of what the W-BPL would look like.
Nazmul Abedinpresident of the BCB women’s wing, confirmed while speaking to reporters in Sylhet that despite four teams being initially considered, the league will only feature three teams to ensure a more competitive tournament. He emphasized that the aim of WBPL is not only financial but also to raise the standard of women’s cricket in the Bangladesh.
Abedin explained that the board concluded that expanding beyond three teams could weaken the quality of the game, which is why the BCB decided on this format. The competition is aimed at providing a platform for local talent while introducing an international flavour, with each team being allowed one foreign player per match.

The WBPL aims to raise the standard of women’s cricket in Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Premier League for Women will be held at the iconic Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur and all the matches will be played there. In terms of player composition, each team will consist of 15 domestic players, while one foreign player will be included in each playing XI to make the tournament diverse. Discussions with franchises have already taken place and there is a strong interest in participating.
Abedin assured that the financial problems, which have affected the men’s BPL in the past, will not affect the WBPL. He referred to the recent controversies involving unpaid salaries in the men’s BPL, stating that precise planning and management would have prevented similar issues from occurring in the women’s competition. With this commitment, the BCB aims to address both the technical and financial challenges, ensuring the successful organization of the WBPL and setting a precedent for the future of women’s cricket in the country.
