BCCI issues strict guidelines for Indian players, warns of disciplinary action for non-compliance
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a comprehensive set of guidelines for Team India players, covering aspects such as travel, personal staff, participation in domestic cricket and conduct during tours. The move aims to foster professionalism, discipline and unity within the team. Failure to comply with these rules could result in serious disciplinary action, including suspension from tournaments and forfeiture of match fees.
Key highlights of the new guidelines
Compulsory participation in domestic cricket
To strengthen the domestic cricket ecosystem, players are now required to participate in domestic matches to remain eligible for national selection. This mandate is designed to ensure talent development, maintain match fitness and inspire emerging players. Exceptions to this rule will only be permitted in exceptional circumstances with the prior approval of the Chairman of the Selection Committee.
Travel and team cohesion
The BCCI emphasized the importance of traveling as a team. Recent incidents, such as players traveling separately with their families during a tour of Australia, have prompted the board to ban individual travel arrangements unless approved in advance by the head coach and chairman of selection committee.
Restrictions for personal personnel
Players will no longer be allowed to bring personal staff, such as hairdressers, cooks or nannies, on tours unless specifically approved by the BCCI. The policy aims to minimize logistical challenges and maintain a focus on team operations.
It stays until the end of the series
Players must remain with the team until the scheduled end of the tour or series, even if the matches end earlier. This rule aims to promote team bonding and avoid interruptions.
Disciplinary measures for non-compliance
The BCCI has warned the players of severe penalties for violating the guidelines. Actions may include suspension from all BCCI-run tournaments, including the IPL, and deductions from retention amounts or match fees.
Family travel policy
The new family travel policy allows players to be joined by spouses and children during overseas tours of more than 45 days. However, visits are limited to a two-week period per series and must be coordinated with the team’s schedule. BCCI will cover the common accommodation expenses but other expenses will be the responsibility of the players.

Other rules and regulations
- Excess baggage: Players must comply with baggage restrictions and additional costs are borne by individuals.
- Exercises: Players are required to attend all practices, ensuring discipline and a strong work ethic.
- Recommendations during the trip: Personal filming and endorsements during tours are prohibited to avoid distraction.
- Participation in BCCI activities: Players must give priority to BCCI official events, shoots and promotional activities.

The BCCI stated that the guidelines are aimed at upholding the highest standards of professionalism while ensuring operational efficiency. “This policy ensures accountability and highlights the importance of prioritizing Indian cricket. Players are expected to strictly adhere to the rules to create an environment in which they can thrive and reach their full potential.” it says in the BCCI document.
By introducing these measures, the BCCI aims to maintain discipline, unity and focus within the Indian team, ensuring that the players live up to the expectations of a modern professional cricket team.
