Top 10 WSL goals of 2024

2024 has been a fantastic year for goals in the Women’s Super League (WSL) with some outrageous acrobatic volleys and pinpoint shots from long range.

So it made perfect sense to rank the top 10 goals this year in 90 minutes, with a combination of goals from the end of the 2023/24 season as well as the start of the 2024/25 campaign. Goals from teams from both ends of the table made the cut, with almost too many options to choose from.

Cornelia Kapocs’ wonder goal against Tottenham, Vivianne Miedema’s first goal since returning from injury and Hanna Bennison’s rocket against Manchester City are just some of the goals to achieve results…

It took until February, but Everton registered their first home win of the 2023/24 season, a 2-0 triumph over West Ham, with Aurora Galli at the heart of it all. She provided the assist for the first before unleashing a superb strike for the second.

The Italy international broke into space on the right flank before cutting inside onto her left foot and firing into the far corner from distance. West Ham goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, pinned to the floor, had absolutely no chance.

Liverpool secured a narrow 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur in October, with midfielder Marie Hobinger scoring twice for the Merseyside club. The winner was a penalty in stoppage time, but her first of the game was the most impressive.

The Reds won a free kick in a dangerous position, and Hobinger stepped up and fired into the top corner. It was certainly the goal of the season candidate.

A goal, a shot, a moment. Vivianne Miedema’s goal against Liverpool at Prenton Park in January Arsenal forward had everything.

It was the Dutch international’s first goal since her return from an ACL injury, and it was a good one. Emily Fox did well to fend off challenges from a number of Liverpool players before picking out Miedema in the middle of the park.

The forward curled a superb long-range effort and keeper Rachael Laws was too high to touch as the contest was wide open. The celebration that followed showed how much it meant and was one of the highlights of the 2023/23 season.

A moment of pure Ella Toona magic helped Manchester United to a narrow 1-0 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in April. There was little to separate the two teams until the late stages of the game when the midfielder won from the bench.

Some good play in the middle of the park allowed former club captain Katie Zelem to find Toone in a tight space. The 25-year-old turned to open up her body and fire a thunderbolt into the top corner from around 25 yards to seal the win.

Arsenal’s start WSL clash with Chelsea in October it couldn’t have gone much worse because they were losing 2-0 after 20 minutes. Mayra Ramirez and Sandy Baltimore gave the visitors a comfortable lead at the Emirates.

Caitlin Foord gave the Gunners a lifeline on the brink of half-time when she pulled one back from a difficult angle. The Australian international lifted the ball into space on the left and managed to beat Lucy Bronze before firing into the far corner.

Manchester City have enjoyed a strong start to the 2024/25 WSL campaign. while they are hot on Chelsea’s heels in the title race. In October, they beat Aston Villa 2-1 at home to keep their hopes alive.

Gabi Nunes opened the scoring for the visitors early in the first half, but Lauren Hemp leveled the scores with a stunning equalizer on the hour mark. Leila Ouahabi’s cross into the penalty area failed to be cleared by Villa and the ball fell kindly to Hemp, whose initial header took the ball wide of the goal.

With her back to the net, she lifted the shot overhead and Sabrina D’Angelo failed to get a touch. Hemp then capped off an outstanding performance with an assist for Jill Roord’s win.

A visit to Manchester City towards the end of the 2023/24 season. didn’t go to plan for Liverpool as they lost a disappointing 4-1 at Prenton Park. However, there were several contenders for goal of the season, notably Khadija Shaw’s first goal to go 2-0 up in the first half.

That goal would probably be on this list if it wasn’t for an even better goal from Liverpool’s Taylor Hinds late in the game. A defender caught Chloe Kelly’s pocket near midfield and she then raced into space before slotting a try from just over 25 yards.

Hinds took the top corner perfectly and City goalkeeper Khiara Keating, in full stretch, failed to get hold of the ball as it rippled into the back of the net. Although a mere consolation for Liverpool, it was undoubtedly one of the goals of the season.

Liverpool’s summer signing Cornelia Kapocs also buried an outrageous goal in the Reds’ narrow 3-2 win over Tottenham in October. The Swedish international opened the scoring in 10 minutes before the end.

Becky Spencer’s poor shot fell to the feet of Kapocs, and with the keeper off her line, she sent from an incredible distance from more than 30 meters into the net.

Everton failed to win against Manchester City in March, but they did take the Manchester club very close with a narrow 2-1 defeat. Shaw and Hemo put the hosts into a comfortable 2-0 lead, but Hanna Bennison’s superb strike late in the game piled on the pressure.

The Sweden international was picked out by loanee Kathrine Kuhl outside the box and managed to turn away from Jess Park before finding the top corner with an incredible long-range strike. The effort hit the crossbar before nestling perfectly into the back of the net.

Although it wasn’t a long-range strike, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s strike for the first of her two goals in a 5-2 home win against Tottenham Hotspur in October was a piece of fine technique. Millie Bright picked out the 27-year-old with a high cross, and volleyed into the far corner with exceptional precision.

The Swedish international assisted Chelsea for the first goal of the game and then scored two late on in what was undoubtedly a man of the match performance. A sublime volley was, unsurprisingly, crowned Women’s Super League Goal of the Month for October.
