Barcelona – Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr on Monday, vowed to defend the interests of US technological companies against “exaggerated” European regulation because he advocated “level and honest playground”.
Speaking to the audience of the technological industry and analyst at the World Congress Conference in Barcelona, Carr said that the technological rules of the European Union were seen as “exaggerated” and “incompatible” with American values.
He made a particularly refer to the EU Digital Services ActA significant part of the regulation from the block aims to solve the illegal and harmful content on the network.
“We return to our roots of the first amendment, where we return to our free speech tradition,” Carr said, adding that there is a feeling that the right to freedom on the Internet is something that is eroded by the Pandemia of Covid-19 2020 and 2021.
“From the president [Donald] Trump for me, throughout the Government, we encourage our technological companies to stop the censors we have seen in the last few years, “Carr said.
“There is some concern I have given the approach that Europe has especially taken from DSA,” he added. “There is a risk that this regulatory regime imposes excessive rules over freedom of speech.”
It is not the first time the US have marked concern about European technological regulation.
At a large international Summit on AI in Paris last month, US Vice President JD Vance Targeted to Europeclaiming that the regulation has created burden on US technological companies.
On February 21, President Trump issued a directive that threatens to impose tariffs to Europe to fight what he called “foreign extortion” of US technological companies through digital services, financial, practices and policies.
In response to Tariff Trump, EU has allegedly threatened to use a New Instrument “Anti-Coercion”which allows the block to take measures in cases of economic coercion against EU Member States.
“I think it’s a care for the people of Europe but [also] For US technological companies that operate here, “Carr said.
“Cenzura that potentially lowers a tube from DSA is something that is incompatible with our tradition of free speech in America, so that the obligations that these technological companies have taken over in the diversity of opinions,” he added.
Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice President of the European Commission for Technology Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, did not directly deal with the comments of the US regulator on exaggerated European rules during speaking during the panel discussion after Carr’s remarks.
Instead, she said that Europe was dedicated to improving competitiveness in the block when it comes to technological innovation and digital transformation.
“We will suggest a few … packages where we revise our rules,” he said later this year, Virkkunen said. She also called for the creation of a digital unique market to reconcile the regulation of the technological and telecommunications industry across the EU.
