Almost 9,000 people died last year trying to cross the borders, says the United Nations Migration Agency.
The number of death cases has set a new gloomy record for the fifth year in a row. The number of deaths at migration routes has more than doubled since 2020.
The International Migration Organization (IOM) recorded 8,938 death cases of migrants in 2024. The real number of death cases is probably much higher, given that many deaths are uncomfortable or unfathomable, according to a statement on Friday.
