Fahmawi adds that most of the camp people are too poor to afford life in larger cities, so they will return to Nur Shams, even if Israel affects its presence to intimidate and disturb Palestine.

“Everywhere in Palestine is dangerous, not just camps … no law and [the Israeli army] can shoot at any Palestinian at any time. However, we have no second place to leave. We have no choice, “he told Al Jazeera.

The wealthier Palestinians have different considerations.

Jadallah said that a close friend moved to Jordan with his family for fear that Israel would soon attack and destroy Palestinian cities – like Tulkarem, Jenin and Ramallah – in the same way they attack the camps.

“My friend lived at the Jenin camp, but then he got a good revenue, so he moved to Jenin City with his family,” Jadallah explained.

“They recently decided to go to Jordan and put their children in school there, because Jenin City becomes too dangerous,” he added, calling for frequent military raids of Israelites who often target civilians.

Fahmawi doesn’t think departure will make Palestinians more secure.
