Meta Main Clerk for Global Affairs Joel Kaplan He says the company’s decision not to offer services in China allowed Tech Corporation to better defend the basic principles of free expression.
Caplan’s comments echo the statement Meta Executive Director Mark Zuckerberg At Georgetown University 2019, where he explained why Facebook, Instagram and other services do not operate in China.
“I wanted our services in China because I believe in connecting the whole world and I thought we could help create an more open society,” Zuckerberg said at the time.

“I worked hard to happen. But we could never agree on what we should do there, and they never let us in. And now we have more freedom to speak and advocate for values we believe in and fight for free expression around the world,” he continued.
Meta services are currently blocked in China. However, the company continues to revenue through partnerships with Chinese advertisers who care for users in other global markets.
During the appearance on Wednesday at A conference on Raisine dialogue, Kaplan noted that Meta, earlier Facebook, had previously expressed interest in providing services in the Chinese market, but in the end he decided against it.

“Ultimately, we were unable to agree on the things that would be needed to offer our services in China, things required from the companies, which offer their services in China, you know, of which many are somehow known to household names,” he said.
By sending Zuckerberg’s comments from 2019, Kaplan said that decision had released the target “less burdened” in defense and deciding behind the principle of freedom of expression.
“At the end of the day, it is a better position for us, the one where we can continue to defend and talk about the values on which Facebook is based on his roots in free expression,” he continued.

Kaplan was eavesdropped to lead the target of a team of global policy in January. The target joined in 2011, and previously was the deputy chief of staff for politics in the administration of George W. Bush.
The target did not return Fox Business’ Request for comment.
