Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahua’s coalition brought a legislature on Thursday morning that brought more control over the selection of judges, part of the controversial effort for the overhaul of the Israeli justice that withdrew the country before the war with Hamas.
The 120 -seat Israeli parliament, known as Knesset, has passed two laws after a multi -day discussion of overnight in voting that mostly boycotted the opposition. The legislation renews the Committee who selects judges, including court judges, in a way that critics say they will politicize the bench.
The law marked the continuation of the two -year effort of the coalition of Mr Netanyahu to expand its control over other branches of power. Before the attack under the leadership of Hamas in October 2023 lit a war in Gaza, Mr. Netanyahu tried similar legislation before mass protests. Suspended the pressure on the preservation of war unity.
Now Mr. Netanyahu has returned to the judicial overhaul, along with the simultaneous efforts to weaken other state guards. He is also trying to release the Attorney General and the head of the Domestic Intelligence.
The laws adopted on Thursday were less far -reaching than the initial proposals of the coalition. But they nevertheless threatened to restart the anxiety that swallowed the land before the war, even while Israel and Hamas participate in a new fight in Gaza.
The crowds of protesters on Wednesday gathered in front of Knesset in Jerusalem to show against legislation, waving Israeli flags. However, in the sign that the war shared the priorities of Mr. Netanyahu’s opponent, many appeared wearing signs by calling for the Government to reach a direct contract with Hamas to release hostages in Gaza.
Inside the building of Parliament, Mr. Netanyahu gave a fiery address arguing that his government policies would serve as a long -needed corrective to a non -seized “deep state,” echoed the rhetoric used by President Donald J. Trump.
