Forever pollution: Zwijndrecht, a Belgian city contaminated by Pfas

“The worst European foci for Pfas” is located in Belgium, in the small town of Zwijndrecht, near Antwerp. For 25 years, the US factory 3M has been produced by perfluoroktan sulfonate (PFOS), one of the oldest substances that are very toxic to health and the environment. In Europe, 2,300 other such “hot points” and a total of 23,000 polluted places are estimated. Recent collaborative assessment survey evaluates decontamination costs at € 100 billion a year. How is this decontamination in practice? And what is the cost of residents already affected by one of the biggest scandals with the environment? Alix Le Bourdon, Anna Joris and Dave Keating.
