Church donation of President Kenya Ruto Sparks Clashes
Police in Kenya dismissed the tear gas to dispel the protesters who tried to occupy the Church recently given by President William Ruto’s significant donation.
A gift to the Ministry of Winners Jesus in the suburbs of Romsamb in Nairobi of 20 meters shilling (£ 155,000; £ 12,000) pulled out criticism of some young Kenyans who fought with high living costs.
Ruto defended his donation and offered a similar gift to another church in Eldoret.
Last year, both the Catholic and Anglican leaders rejected the donations, claiming that there was a need to protect the Church from use for political purposes.
Several people were arrested during the conflict, which caused protesters to enter the church and light fires and use rocks to block nearby roads.
But the church service continued with close security for worshipers, a report of local media.
Bishop Edward Mwai said that unnamed people mobilized “robberies” to disrupt the church service, the Stari website reports.
Ruto, an evangelical Christian, defended the donation, saying that it was an attempt to deal with the moral decay of the earth.
“Kenya must know God so that we are embarrassed by people who tell us that we cannot hang out with the Church,” he was quoted by a nation in another church, in Eldoret.
The Kenyans have angry a number of tax rise introduced since Ruto was elected in 2022.
He says they should have repaid the huge debts he inherited from the previous government, but many Kenyans claim that he should first fight public waste and corruption.
Last year, a wave of protest throughout the country forced Ruto to withdraw his proposal for the Finance Act, which contained a number of tax rise.
