Canadian Liberal Party to choose a new leader and prime minister to replace Trudeau: what to know
Two Albert friends, both with a strong career abroad and similar origins – graduates with Harvard and Oxford, members of the liberal global elite – have a replacement of Justin Trudeau as the leaders of the Liberal Party and the Earth, just as Canada faces a generation crisis for the Tariff Trump administration.
About 400,000 members of the Liberal Party were threw voting gans into an important race of their party to decide who would inherit Mr. Trudeau and mark a new era in Canadian politics. Whoever wins will have to call the general elections, which must be held until October, but could happen before.
The election results will be announced at a special event in Ottawa, the capital, around 6:30 pm on Sunday.
Who are the candidates?
The race is between Mark Carney59, former Governor of the Canada and Bank of England and a reputable green investor and former finance minister Chrystia Freeland56, whose resignation launched Mr. Trudeau’s decision to step down. Surveys have shown that Mr. Carney is a front runner.
The third candidate, Karina Gould, 37, tries to trace her trace as a future leader of the party, distinguishing herself from two others as more obvious and more leaning. Frank Baylis (62), a businessman and a former member of the Parliament, also runs.
Mrs. Freeland and Mr. Carney share a similar background and are considered to be technically competent centrals with a tendency for a fiscal discipline.
Mrs. Freeland has had a successful career in international journalism, but has been a prominent politician in Canada for the last 10 years. Her record as a finance minister and, earlier, foreign minister, she is carefully observed. Her villains consider her responsible not to oppose Mr. Trudeauu, under whom she served, when his policies became increasingly unpopular.
She tried to re -introduce the Canadian public as a candidate for multiple grass roots who listened to criticism and would leave unprofitlative policies like Mr. Trudeau’s taxes on the carbon show.
And she set herself as the best person who opposed President Trump as he triggers tariffs against Canada, as well as threats to the sovereignty of the country. Mr. Trump draws a strong aversion to her – after calling her a “poisonous”, “blow” and “incompetent” after he has called her “poisonous”.
Mrs. Freeland successful negotiation The North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement on behalf of Canada during the first term of Mr. Trump. The contract binds to Canada, the United States and Canada.
Mr. Carney, while most of his career was in public, was not a traditional politician before he gave his offer to the party leadership.
He joined the public sector as a senior official of the Ministry of Finance in 2004, served under successive liberal and conservative governments, and was later eavesdropped on to run a central bank in Canada and Britain.
He was praised for his effect in both posts, helping in Canada the time of the 2008 financial crisis and the management of Britain via Brexit, although critics accused him of encouraging fear by suggesting that Brexit would harm the country’s economy.
What are their promises about the campaign?
Mr. Carney’s plan is focused on the strengthening of the Canadian economy, which extinguished by inflation and low productivity. High housing costs have become a central issue in Canada, and Mr. Carney has committed to building four million homes over several years.
Like Mrs. Freeland, Mr. Carney also plans to form a carbon carbon TRUDEAUA Tax and replace it with a price system that would require industrial pollutants to pay consumers to reduce their carbon prints.
Mrs. Freeland platform focused on areas of policy that has become obligations for the liberal party, including an emphasis on solving the lack of a Canadian doctor, increasing military consumption and opposition Foreign interference in politics.
How will the day go?
Members of the Liberal Party managed to vote online after they signed up with the party and confirmed their identity. The vote began on February 26. The results will be monitored on the Liberal Party website, and Rogers fans are expected to gather at about 6:30 pm for the announcement of the results.
Mr. Trudeau is expected, who will be limited for almost a decade as a prime minister and 13 years as a liberal leader.
The new leader is likely to swear as a prime minister over the next week. Proceedings are in line with the Westminster Parliamentary System, which follows in Britain and elsewhere.
What happens next?
What happens next is not fully copied and will partly depend on who the new leader is.
Mr. Carney was not chosen and has no place in parliament. His campaign indicated that he would call the federal elections shortly after he was appointed Prime Minister.
Mrs. Freeland, who has a parliamentary place, said in an interview with the New York Times that she would consider whether the fast elections are a good idea given the continuous threat of tariffs and their influence on the Canadian economy.
The federal elections must be held until October in accordance with the Canadian rules. The conservative party he was leading Pierre PoilievreHe has long held a lead of 20 points across liberals at the polls, but the gap has been closing since Mr. Trudeau announced his resignation and Mr Trump started moving against Canada.
AND latest polling station It suggests that most respondents would choose Mr. Carney over Mr. Poilievre if he led the Liberal Party to the polls. Voters would also choose Mrs. Freeland over Mr. Poilievre, though the rope marginSurveys show.
Surveys also show that Canadians prefer Mr. Carney and Mrs. Freeland to negotiate with Mr. Trump for Mr. Poilievre.
