Argentine president Javier Milei He declared a period of mourning after a flash in the port city of Bahia Blanc killed at least 16 people and was still missing.
The President’s Office announced late Sunday that the country would mark three days of national mourning over the tragedy, which followed after heavy rain had spoiled the port city of Bahia Blanc. The statement did not say when the period of grief would begin.
“All areas of the National Government will remain dedicated … to help the victims at the moment of sadness for all Argentines,” the Presidency announced.
The deadly floods hit on Friday when the annual rain, estimated at 260 millimeters (10 inches), fell in a few hours in Bahia Blanca, a large port city south of Buenos Aires.
Province Security Minister Buenos Aires Javier Alonso confirmed that two girls, one and five years old, were taken to Bujica on Sunday and were among the victims.
Mayor of Bahia Blanca Federico Susbielles said at a press conference that the flood had caused $ 400 million in infrastructure damage.
In the post on X, he said that “there were 16 confirmed deaths, but there will probably be more” as the efforts to search continue.
The storm left most of the surrounding coastal area without electricity.
Economy Minister Luis Caputo said on X that the Government had approved $ 10 billion ($ 9.2 million) financial assistance for Bahia Blanc, which had a population of 300,000.
