The National League clubs are launching a campaign for three promotions in the English Football League | Football news
National League clubs invite EFL to allow three teams to promote from the fifth layer from the end of next season.
Since 2003, two teams have grown from the National League in the League two every season – two – champions and winners of the Play -off.
There were some notable success stories, such as Luton, who arrived in the Premier League 2023, nine years after a fifth layer promotion. Wrexham – owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney – aim to provide a third direct promotion to the Championship after winning the National League title in 2023.
Now 72 teams in the National League and its divisions with the north and southern feeder, as part of the newly created ‘3UP’ campaign, invited the EFL clubs to vote to increase this number at their annual assembly in June, so that three teams go to the league two at the end of the season 2025-26.
“The promotions used the vast majority of our clubs during this 21 -year period, but third place – bringing in the National League in accordance with the rest of the game – it would be completely transformative,” said National League CEO Mark Ives.
“The National League currently has 15 clubs that are former EFL clubs. “
League Chair Jack Pearce added: “Although we recognize and respect the verbal support of the EFL for the National League in three promotions, our clubs have now clearly clarified that they do not see the reason for further delay in the official process.
“Rick Parry, Chairman EFL, often said that” Efl should look down as above, “so we would like to actually happen now.”
EFL: League in accordance with its devotion to the pyramid
Said spokesman for EFL Sky Sports News: “Recognizing the power of the pyramid, the league was consistent in its commitment to look both up and down when considering future changes.
“As such, we are still ready to consider changes in the current position on promotion and outburst in EFL, but these discussions must be part of a wider reform package that benefits from all levels of the game.”
The campaign time is related to the expectation that a football independent regulator will be officially established in some stage this year.
Pearce added: “(Regulator) Total objectives include providing financial sustainability, economic resistance and preservation of sports heritage.
“As for the heritage, the National League clubs are located in the center of cities and cities throughout the country. Most of these clubs are more than a century old and part of the tissues of their communities.
“An additional place for promoting these clubs in EFL would create an invaluable pursuit for all these clubs and fans – plus clubs in the Lower League. We just can’t wait for the parity in the game anymore.
“We have been consistently told that EFL supports our 3up position in principle, but they are reluctant to progress any changes as they are advised with the MSFI (regulator) and the Premier League regarding their redistribution of football revenue.
“However, we believe that the goal of the 3up campaign is vital for the overall health of the Government game and goals – so it should be as high on the agenda as any other thing this year.
“Otherwise, the National League needs are neglected during the MSFI procedure, especially since specific issues between the EFL PL could potentially take years to reach the conclusion.”
Talks on the “new agreement” on television money between the Premier League and EFL stopped last March. The regulator is set up to obtain backward powers to impose a solution if the leagues cannot be agreed.
