“Earlier this week, we learned that Trump’s administration is compounding an executive order to close the education department,” Gillibrand said on Sunday. “This would endanger thousands of jobs in New York and billions of dollars in federal financing for children, teachers, families and schools in New York. We are here to show them that we are ready to fight for our children, fight for our communities and fight for our schools. “
As Trump is expected to take steps this month to abolish the education department, Democrats have started another week of Trump’s second term, protesting with the efficiency of the Ministry of Government. Trump’s administration rejected protests as an attempt to “recover from its unpleasant loss” in November.

Gillibrand reminded New Yorkers on Sunday that the disassembly of the Ministry of Education would require the approval of the congress.
“What he does is illegal. It is unconstitutional. It is unconstitutional and illegal. It is unconstitutional because Congress is the only body that is allowed to decide how to send the taxpayers New Yorkers to Washington.”

Hochul warned New Yorkers to pick up the card if Trump switched off the education department.
“Most of your tax on property taxes are your school taxes,” Hochul said. “If that money evaporates from the Federal Government, where will it go? This will hit owners and companies, and I want to be aware of this consequence.”

Hochul said that the aversion of the Department of Education could deny Pell Grarants students, a program financed with federal means that helps students with low income to pay college and New York City ‘Nutrition programs in public schools, which provide free meals for breakfast, lunch and after school. Hochul urged New York Republicans to speak in Washington for public school students in New York.
“This is anger,” Gillibrand added. “Trump’s administration steals money from our children, from our teachers and from our schools. These are tax dollars in New York.”

Hochul and Gillibrand join the growing coalition of Democrats who speak against Trump’s educational plans.
