Trump’s administration and the Ministry of Efficiency of the Government of Elon Musk (Doge) have moved to control over – and perhaps extinguished – agencies founded to protect consumers after the 2007-8 financial crisis.
The Consumer Protection Office (CFPB) supervises the banks and holds a huge cost of consumers.
As part of the US federal reserves, CFPB is an independent agency, but Trump’s budget director was installed as its director on Friday, and the Doge officials were given access to the agency’s computer systems.
About 100 workers protested on Saturday outside the CFPB office.
The Agency is the latest department of the US government to which Doge, an unofficial group to reduce the cost Donald Trump has given wide freedom to reduce state consumption and removal of employees.
Musk and Doge have already made efforts to remove USAIDs, the main US agencies for foreign assistance, and Doge employees have also been reportedly seen in several other federal departments.
The number of dog staff, its budget and operating structure is not clear. Musk and the White House provided several details about dog surgery, and the names of Doge employees have mainly come from leakage of government employees.
CBS, US news from the BBC, reported that Doge -Dog representatives received access to the internal systems of CFPB, including staff and financial records.
Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Doge’s representatives received “only to read” access to CFPB computer systems.
The agency regulates banks and financial institutions with more than $ 10 billion (£ 8 billion) of property.
It was founded in 2011 as part of a reform after a reversal of a great recession between 2007 and 8, which partially launched a decline in the US mortar marketing market for subprima.
There are about 1,750 employees and an annual budget of $ 758 million.
Openly reported proposal of complex products and there is a note of representing the claim rules. For example, in 2024, she limited a late credit card fee to 8 USD (£ 6.45), although this change in the rules was delayed with a legal challenge.
The agency has long been the target of Republicans who accused her of excessive departure, unnecessarily limiting banks and using money from fine and settlements to finance left activist groups.
The CFPB cover cover has returned the error message on Saturday, however, it seems that most of the rest of the site has functioned as normal.
The top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, Maxine Waters, announced a statement that claimed that Doge “systematically killed CFPB”.
“Musk’s download of CFPB is a five-alarm crisis and a scary violation of privacy data on millions of Americans CFPB at the moment of despair,” Waters said.
Waters said that information could include bank fees, credit card information, social security numbers and medical information.
In a statement, the National Treasury Employee Union, which represents the employees of CFPB, said the activities of Dogeo represented a “potentially dangerous intrusion”. The union said he would continue all ways to protect the private data of consumer and financial institutions.
Musk wrote “CFPB RIP” on Friday on his X account. By publishing several times an hour, he repeated charges of broad crime, fraud and abuse throughout the Government and indicated that he would try to close the bureau.
Last month, President Trump dismissed CFPB director Rohita Chopra, named President Joe Biden, and appointed Scott Treasury Minister for Head of the Agency.
But on Friday, Trump made another switch, giving control of the agency over Russell Vought, the newly opened director of the Office for Management and Budget.
Vought was the author of the 2025 project, List of proposals published by Think Tank Foundation Heritage Foundation – One of which requires CFPB to be abolished.
BBC contacted CFPB, White House and Doge spokeswoman for a comment.
