Faced with the increase in Femid in Kenya

In September 2024, the brutal murder of the Olympic Runner Rebecca Chepptegei in September 2024 brought renewed global attention to a quiet epidemic in Kenya: Femicide and other forms of violence against women. With almost 100 women who were killed by men in just three months, 2024 was one of the most deadly years recorded for Kenyan women. Since the mentality is slow to change and in the lack of a meaningful response of the Government, some Kenyan women take things into their own hands by registering in the class of self -defense. And while the Government of William Ruto presented a 42-member working group for resolving a gender-based violence in January, feminist activists are already an concern to make it a slightly significant influence. Erin Ogunkeya spoke with Feminist and Professor of Security Awino Okech at the Soas University in London for more. She is also the director of the Feminist Center for Racial Justice.
