Why Bruno Fernandes was ‘upset’ by Man Utd’s improved performance at Liverpool

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes admitted he was “upset” after Sunday’s draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool, despite it being one of the under-fire side’s best performances of the season.

United went into the match at Anfield on the back of a poor December, during which they lost six of ten games in all competitions – including five of seven in the Premier League alone.

With Liverpool setting the standard at home and in Europe this season, having also won 3-0 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in September, most expected United’s run to continue.

But Lisandro Martinez put Ruben Amorim’s side ahead in the second half. And while Liverpool then scored twice for themselves, Amad Diallo equalized take a deserved point. It was another proof that Unitedwho also beat Manchester City in recent weeks, are capable of such displays, which in turn has been a source of frustration for Fernandes at a lack of consistency.

“I think it’s a really good result,” said the midfielder Sky Sports.

“We could have even won the game at the end. It’s a fair result. I’m upset because if we show this against Liverpool why can’t we do it every week? I finally put in a real performance as a whole. We need a lot more from ourselves to get more than this season.”

Looking ahead in light of the performance at Anfield, Fernandes revealed he was actually more “concerned” about facing struggling Southampton in the Premier League than Arsenal in the FA Cup.

“It was here, but it didn’t make it to today’s game,” he reflected. “Now we have an FA Cup game against Arsenal which will be very tough again. We want to be in that final again. I’ll probably be more worried about Southampton after this performance [against Liverpool].”

Amorim made similar comments after the final whistle, admitting that watching United play at Anfield only “made him angrier about the other games”.
