During the 23rd game in Big Bash League 2024-25cricket fans were treated to a rare and inventive display of athleticism Melbourne Stars‘ left-handed medium fast bowler Joel Paris attempted an outstanding run-out against Melbourne Renegades dough Jacob Bethell. The game, played to a packed house, witnessed moments of high drama, including outstanding efforts from Paris in the field and a key breakthrough that changed the course of the game.

The incident happened during the 16th over of Melbourne Renegades’ innings. Paris delivered a slower one at 113.7 km/h which fooled Bethell, who missed his pull attempt and was hit in the thigh pad. The ball flew towards the leg side, encouraging Jonathan Wells call for a quick single.
Paris, showing incredible presence of mind and agility, ran across and took a back kick without looking on the non-attacking side. The ball flew through the air and hit the stumps, leaving the crowd in awe. However, despite a valiant effort, Bethell had already safely entered his crease.

Paris did not have to wait long for redemption. Later in the same run, he dismissed Bethell, who had been the anchor of the Renegades’ innings and was just one run shy of his maiden BBL half-century. A short delivery from Paris went up awkwardly to Bethell, forcing a missed shot. The ball took the top edge and flew into the short third, where it is Sam Harper ran over to complete the crisp catch.
Bethell’s 49-run dismissal from 36 balls (4 fours, 2 sixes) ended a crucial partnership and gave the Melbourne Stars much-needed momentum during the Power Surge.
The Melbourne Renegades set a challenging target
Melbourne Renegades managed to post a competitive total of 168 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Bethell became the top scorer, while Joel Paris was the best thrower Melbourne Starstaking 2 wickets in his four over spell.
