Charith Asalanka pulled an absolute blinder to send Rachin Ravindra packing during the second ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The match, played at Hamilton’s Seddon Park, saw the hosts looking to wrap up the series, while Sri Lanka fought tooth and nail to stay alive.
A shaky start for New Zealand, but Ravindra stayed alive
New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner decided to bat first after winning the toss. But things didn’t get off to a good start as Will Young returned to the hut by the fifth over, leaving the Kiwis shaky early on.
Then came Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra to steady the ship. The duo added 112 runs, pulling New Zealand out of trouble. Ravindra in particular looked like he was batting on the second pitch – fluid, calm and under control.
Asalanka’s moment of magic is a game changer
Everything seemed to be going right for New Zealand until Charith Asalanka reinforced. In the 23rd more, Wanindu Hasaranga bowled one which Ravindra tried to play on the back foot. It was not well timed, and the ball went high towards the cover.
Asalanka, located on the cover, read it perfectly. He jumped at the right moment, taking the ball out of the air. The crowd in Hamilton could not believe it and Ravindra, who had 79 off 63 balls, could only come back shaking his head.
That catch was a game changer. Ravindra was in red-hot form and his dismissal gave Sri Lanka a real chance to make a comeback.

Ravindra’s form is a big boost for New Zealand and CSK
Despite the heartbreak of the exit, Rachin Ravindra’s form is currently one of the biggest positives for New Zealand. He smashed 45 off 36 in the first ODI and followed it up with a superb 79 in this match.
With the ICC Champions Trophy around the corner, New Zealand will be delighted to see him firing on all cylinders. And it’s not just the Kiwis who are keeping an eye on him — Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans will also be excited. Ravindra is likely to open or take the No.3 slot for CSK in the upcoming IPL season. If he wears this form, he will be a game changer for them.
