UK City Minister Tulip Siddiq has resigned from her post after being embroiled in a scandal involving the ousted Bangladesh government.
A close ally and friend of British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is the second minister to resign from his government since it came to power last July.
Siddiqwhose job as finance minister included fighting illegal financing, has faced pressure to resign since the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission named her in a corruption probe in December.
The Financial Times then revealed that Siddique had been given a two-bedroom apartment in London by a developer in 2004 with links to the Awami League party run by her aunt, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.
The Labor MP also lived in several other properties linked to the first Awami League regime. Siddiq has denied any wrongdoing and last week approached Sir Laurie Magnus, the government’s independent adviser on ministerial standards.
