The Olympic Gold Medal Tom Daley entered the centuries -old care strategy to help him overcome the pressure to perform at the world’s largest sporting event, he told CNBC.
“The pressure of what means to enter the Olympic game in which you have to perform on that one day, and those six diving must be perfect, and if not, it’s over,” Daley, the most pronounced Britain and a recently retired diver, said CNBC Tania Bryer at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January. “So, to enter this, of course, it’s completely scary and you have to get to a place where you can be as relaxed as possible and calmer.”
Daley’s 16-year-old Olympics Diving Career began at just 14 when he won gold at the European Championships. He continued to win a total of five Olympic medals.
In an interview with Bryer CNBC, he admitted that he was initially skeptical of attention – but he found that it was growing on it.
“After 2016, I started doing care. I started doing breathing techniques, guided meditation and it took me a year to actually start doing it, because as soon as someone said, ‘Oh, you should try attention, you should try meditation,’ I’m like “Come on.
Daley considered “challenging” at first, but in the end he got into the momentum of things.
“What I loved in this was the fact that I could go to this bank in my mind if you want. I like to think care as going to the mind bank and take out the whole money in cash you need for a day but nice thing in this bank It is that he does not run out of cash. WITHOh, during the day, you can go back to this Bank of Mind and take any money you need to be able to perform in the best order, “he explained.
Carefully tried and tested a method that has been proven to reduce anxiety and depression. One study 2024 on 1,247 adults from 91 countries Southampton University and Bath They found that, after a month of practicing, they were over 10 minutes a day, reporting reduced depression, improved well -being and reduced anxiety.
In fact, only a few minutes of care of a day can make the world of differences, Vishen Lakhiani, Executive Director Mindvalley and meditation expert for 20 years, said CNBC Make it.
“People think the length of your meditation is what determines the quality of your meditation. [That’s] It’s not true … don’t think you need an hour in meditation, “he said.
“You can enter peace in peace from one to three minutes, and you can see extraordinary results. The biggest advantages will happen in the first few minutes,” Lakhiani added at the time.
Knitting as a form of care
Daley said it became harder to find time to practice care after having children. He and his husband Dustin Lance Black have two sons together, and six years old.
“Then [eldest son] Robbie was born and, sitting 10 minutes of care throughout the day, it became a little impossible. Because, with their children, all parents will know that you can break up during the day at various points, “Daley told Bryer.
“Actually it was just at the beginning [the Covid-19] Locking where my path of care was switched to knitting, mostly because the coach said to me, “You’re always on the move. You always do something. You have to learn to sit still because your vacation and recovery are just as important as a diving training itself.”
Daley’s husband suggested at the time to start knit, so he ordered the needles and learned himself to knit using YouTube videos.
This has led to the Instagram media account of his knitting and tailoring journey called “Made with Love”, which has now has 1.4 million followers from Thursday. Daley eventually turned his knit passion into a business in which he sells his creations.
“It is my passion that I can bring a craft as a form of care as much as possible, not just knitting and hooking. I mean, it can be embroidery, it can be a cross -sting, a candle making, you name it,” he added.
