Mexico awaits Google response before filing a lawsuit due to the Gulf dispute | US-mexico border news
Mexico opposed Google to the change of the name of the Mexican Bay to the ‘American Bay’ for users in the US.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government is waiting for another Google response because of the Mexico request that a technological giant completely Return the name of the Mexican Bay to Google Maps before fining the lawsuit.
The bay currently appears in Google Maps as a “US Bay” when he is approached from the United States, while appearing as a “Gulf of Mexican” when he is approached from Mexico. When internationally approached, both names appear in the format: “Gulf of Mexican (US Bay).”
“We will wait for Google’s response and if not, we will continue in court,” Sheinbaum said at the briefing for news on Monday, sharing a letter from Google addressed to her government, saying that his name would not change his name.
“By no means, Mexico will not accept the renamed the geographical zone within its own territory and under its jurisdiction,” Mexican authorities also stated in a statement.

‘Mexican America’
Google’s move to change the bay name came last week in Reply to US President Donald Trump Executive order renamed the water body, as part of the wider initiative intended for “honor of the American size”.
In an interview with journalists on board Air Force One while signed by the order, Trump said he would now be known on February 9th as “Bay Day of America.”
The name “Mexican Bay” dates from 1607 and the title was officially recognized by the United Nations.
After Trump’s command, Sheinbaum sarcastically suggested that North America be renamed “Mexican America”, as once referred to in one of the founding documents of the country.
Trump’s executive command also renewed the name “Mount McKinley” – the highest peak of North America located in Alaska and named after former US President William McKinley in 1917. This move canceled the decision of Obama’s administration to recognize the indigenous name of Mountain, Denali.
Google said it would also be in line with this command at Mount McKinley after the change has been made at the US data database.
In Google’s letter to the Mexican government, Cris Turner, Google’s Vice President of Government and Public Policy, said the company uses the “US Bay” to follow its “long -standing MAPS policy” that applies “impartial and consistent in all regions”.
In his letter, Turner added that the company was willing to meet personally with the Mexican government to talk about the matter.
“Although international contracts and conventions are not intended to regulate that private mapping providers represent geographical features, our consistent policy is to consult more authoritative sources to provide the latest and accurate representations of the world,” he wrote.
The change of name also caused friction within the USA.
Last week White House banned Associated Press Journalists of news agencies from several events compared to the rejection of a news agency to use the new “US Bay” title.
AP still uses the “Mexican Bay”, but admits Trump’s new name.
