Tim Scott ‘agnostic’ in reconciliation debate says ‘results’ are more important

FIRST ON FOX: Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee Tim ScottRS.C., doesn’t dwell on the details of exactly how Republicans are packaging key bills during the crucial budget reconciliation process before sending them to President Donald Trump’s desk.

“I think for us the results are more important than the process,” he told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview after a meeting between Trump and House and Senate GOP leaders.

“And if that requires us to do border security, tax reform, deportation — whatever we can put in a package or multiple packages — we have to produce results for the people,” he explained.

Benefit from budget reconciliation process is that the threshold for ending debate in the Senate is lower, allowing Republicans to defeat a legislative filibuster with only the support of their conference, rather than the usual 60 votes. However, the use of the process is limited and may not include what are considered “contemporary provisions”.

Scott is “process agnostic,” he said. This is a different position from that of the Republican leaders in the House of Representatives, who were adamant about fitting everything into one measure.

The South Carolina The Republican joined other members of the GOP leadership in the Senate and their counterparts in the House of Representatives in meeting with Trump on Tuesday.

According to him, “we did not aim to reach a consensus on reconciliation”, despite reports that a certain approach to reconciliation had been agreed. “I see it as an inaugural meeting, an opportunity for us to recognize that President Trump is the visionary leader we need.”

He acknowledged that budget reconciliation was discussed, “but the important part was that the goal of creating a one-team approach to the problems that we have to solve for the American people was achieved. And President Trump was very clear that it’s not about us.”

Asked if that meant the approach to the reconciliation process was still undecided or subject to change, Scott said: “I guess it depends on who you talk to.”

He noted that House Republican leaders emphasized “the importance of a big, beautiful bill.”

“I think the House of Representatives definitely sees a way for a big, beautiful bill to become law and for them to have the votes for it. That’s their goal.”

However, Scott said, “I think we’re still open to finding a way to win,” whether it’s one count or two counts.

Many Senate Republicans have expressed their general preference for two separate budget reconciliation bills, one dealing with the border and one dealing with taxes.

As for whether those joint meetings with Republican leaders and the president will become routine, Scott said, “I certainly hope so.”

“I think one of the things we have to really appreciate about President Trump is that he wants results. And that means we all have to hear the same thing, as often as possible, at the same time, so that there’s no difference in our understanding and there’s no daily light between us.”

It’s still unclear how the reconciliation bill or bills will take shape, but the South Carolina senator said the president wants to get it done as soon as possible.
