The northwestern city of Joypurhat was supposed to host a friendly football game between his district women’s team and another from a nearby rankpur on Wednesday, but the place and its contents were destroyed, the local organizers said.
“Islamists in our area gathered in the field and headed for the place. There were hundreds, “said the organizer of the tournament Samiul Hasan Emon for the AFP news agency.
“The situation worsened and we had to cancel today’s event.”
Abu Bakkar Siddique, principal of a local religious school, said that demonstrations joined his students and teachers and students from several other religious schools.
“Football for girls is non -Islamic,” he said. “Our religious duty is to stop everything that goes against our beliefs.”
The incident happened after another match was postponed to Dynjpur on Tuesday in a nearby town after a similar demonstration of protesters who have sticks.
“The match was suspended half an hour before it was supposed to start. We had to quickly move the girls to a safer place,” Master Moniruzzaman Zia told AFP.
Local administration officer Amit Roy said four people were injured when protesters and unincess were lobbied bricks to each other, but all have been discharged from the hospital since then.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) quickly condemned the incident on Wednesday.
“Football is for everyone, and women have a full right to participate in it,” the statement of the media manager BFF -Aa Sadman Sakib said in a statement.
