The Sentry: Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa set for Sunday showdown in first PGA Tour event of 2025 | Golf news
Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa are set for Sunday’s showdown at The Sentry with just one shot separating them after both posted 11-under 62s in the third round.
Former Masters winner Matsuyama leads at 27 under par at Kapalua with two-time major champion Morikawa at 26 under in the first PGA Tour event of 2025.
Matsuyama had an eagle putt at 18 to tie the course record but had to settle for birdie, one of 11 the Japanese posted as he set a career-high on a flawless day in Hawaii and held on to the second-round lead.
American Morikawa also closed with a birdie, his ninth of the round to go with a 25-foot eagle on the par-five fifth that temporarily moved him into the lead.
“Collin played well and I just followed him, good day,” Matsuyama said. “It’s been a lot of fun, but I’d like it to calm down tomorrow.”
Morikawa said of his performance in the final round: “You look back at the greats, they are. You look back at Tiger [Woods]he did it every week.
“I think if I asked myself, ‘Have I done this for the last six years, every time?’ Probably not, but I’m going to have a hard time going into this year saying, ‘I’ve got four days, let’s see what I can do’.”
Belgium’s Thomas Detry is five shots behind Matsuyama in third place at 22-under par after eight-under on Saturday, while Korea’s Sungjae Im is one back at 21-under after matching Matsuyama and Morikawa’s 11-under 62.
Englishman Harry Hall is fifth at 20 under after a third-round 66.
