The Governor of the Congo province died after the fighting with the rebels approaching the capital, the authorities say
The governor of Northern Kiva in Eastern Congo died from injuries sustained during the battle on the front line, the authorities said on Friday, while the M23 rebels approached the capital of the province.
M23 has achieved significant territorial gains in recent weeks, surrounding Goma, which has about two million people and is a regional center of security and humanitarian efforts.
The circumstances over the death of Major General Peter Cirimwami were unclear, but Cirimwami, who conducted military operations in the restless northern Kivu, visited the troops on the first line in Kasenngezija, about 13 kilometers from Goma, on the day of his death.
His death on Thursday was confirmed by the Government Source, the military source and the Source of the UN on Friday, and everyone spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about it. The governor passed away at the hospital after sustaining injuries to the front line, they said.
On Thursday, a panic expanded in the crowd when the rebels took control of Sake, a city only 27 kilometers from the capital of the province and one of the last major routes to a city that is still under the Government, towards the UN leader.
M23 is one of about 100 armed groups that fight for a foothold in minerals rich in eastern Congo, along the border with Rwand, in decades of a long conflict that has created one of the world’s greatest humanitarian crises. More than seven million people have been displaced for fighting.
Earlier this month, the M23 has occupied the cities of Mines, Katale and Masisi, west of Goma.
M23 took Goma in 2012 and controlled for more than a week.
Congo, the US and UN experts accuse Ruano of supporting the M23, which is mainly consisting of ethnic Tutsi, which separated from the Congenian army more than ten years ago.
Rwanda’s government denied this claim, but last year admitted that she had troops and rocket systems in Eastern Congo to protect her safety, pointing to the accumulation of Congenian forces near the border. UN experts estimate that up to 4000 Rwande forces in Congo.
Tension, conflicts
The city of Goma was affected by sensory tensions, while conflicts between the Kong and M23 armed forces on the outskirts of the city raged on Friday.
The fighting is concentrated in Kibumba, about 25 kilometers north of Goma, and around Sake, in the west. More than 178,000 people have escaped in front of M23 in the last two weeks.
Alliance Gentil, 25, was among the dozens of displaced people on the way from Sake to Gome on Friday. Sitting on her water container beside her things, with her baby on her back, she said she was tired of running away.
“I run, but I don’t know where I will,” said the mother of two children, adding that she had been running twice in the last month.
The front line near Goma is just a few dozen meters away from the Lushagal and Bulengo campsites, which stimulates fear among those who sought security near the capital of the province.
Tens of thousands of others have arrived in Kampovi in Gom and on her outskirts in recent weeks, who have already been home for almost 600,000 displaced persons, according to the UN refugee agency.
Explosions of heavy weapons echoed Goma on Friday. Many stores and stores have remained closed and police are deployed on the main city streets. Military checkpoints are erected around the city that check all the vehicles.
