The Democratic congressman calls on his party to cooperate with Trump
Rep. Tom Suozzi, DN.Y., ushered in the new year with a New York Times guest essay urging fellow Democratic lawmakers to drop the resistance and work with President-elect Donald Trump in his second term.
IN his piecethe congressman acknowledged that the results of the 2024 election reveal that voters want the Democratic Party to compromise on major issues, such as the economy and immigration, rather than block Trump’s agenda as they did during his first term.
“As a Democratic member of Congress, I know my party will be tempted to stand firm against Mr. Trump at every turn: uniting against his bills, blocking his nominees, and stalling the machinery of the House and Senate. That would be a mistake,” he said.

Suozzi, who was chosen in New York’s 3rd Congressional District earlier this year after being ousted by former GOP Rep. George Santos, admitted he is wary of Trump’s willingness to compromise with Democratic lawmakers, citing some of the former president’s post-election behavior.
“I am not a liar: Some of Mr. Trump’s actions provide little assurance that he is willing to accept the bipartisanship and compromise that is necessary for a functioning democracy,” he said, pointing to the president-elect’s “radical cabinet picks,” his requests for a recent government spending bill and his “Haughty” in bringing businessmen and advisers Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy around Capitol Hill.
Suozzi advised that Trump should “embrace his inner dealer and negotiate with the other party that has barely half the seats on Capitol Hill and key governorships across the country,” adding that if Trump does that, “Democrats should meet him halfway rather than being a party to No.”

The lawmaker condemned his party’s “significant shift to the left” and mentioned that both parties want to work together. “But as a common-sense Democrat who won a district that Mr. Trump also won, I’m sure our narrowly divided electorate would rather have bipartisan solutions than political gridlock.”
He acknowledged the idea that Trump’s victory was “mandate” from the American people, but clarified that it is not “for one-party rule”.
“But the way I see it, the results of the 2024 campaign were a mandate for border security, immigration reform, low inflation, economic stability, and common ground on the struggles between culture and war,” he argued.
He went on to offer examples of what democratic compromises might look like, starting with climate change. He said, “Democrats cannot abandon our zeal to fight climate change. At the same time, let’s balance our commitment to protecting the environment with pragmatic measures that protect affordable utility bills and affordable costs at the pump.”

“We’re moving beyond relentless attacks on commonly held religious values while ensuring that the rights, safety and dignity of all are respected,” Suozzi said, acknowledging that liberals should embrace “efforts to make government more efficient and effective” as long as they still defend “strengthening Social Security, Medicare and the Affordable Care Act.”
Suozzi said his New Year’s resolution was to rise above estrangement and strife while embracing “common sense.”
