Britain’s competition watchdog will examine whether Apple and Google should be subject to extra scrutiny over how they operate their mobile platforms, in its second investigation under new digital market regulations.

The Directorate for Market Competition and Markets said Thursday that it will investigate how the makers of the iPhone and Android smartphone operating systems competed with each other, whether they favored their own apps and services, and whether developers were treated fairly.

The CMA has been in the spotlight this week after the government pushed out his chair as part of broader efforts aimed at growth.

“More competitive mobile ecosystems could drive new innovation and new opportunities across a range of services used by millions of people, whether they’re app stores, browsers or operating systems,” said Sarah Cardell, chief executive of the CMA.

This is a developing story
