Chairman Barclays Nigel Higgins said he now has a different opinion on the relationship of former executive director Jesfrey Epstein with the late sex offender after defending him before.
London court listened on Monday that Higgins explained the “cute” e -Poruke that Staley sent Epstein as “the way he says” “a lot of people.”

“The information I am now aware of is a different picture of the nature of the relationship in my mind.”
He added: “If my colleagues were in Barclays and I was aware of all the information I am of now aware of, I am sure that in the depth we would question Mr. Staley about this further information.
“At this distance, and without the use of discussions about this information with Mr. Staley and other colleagues, I cannot be sure what we would conclude.
“However, based on the information I am now aware of (although without having the opportunity to test it with Mr. Staley), it is likely to take a different approach” in response to FCA questions.
The case focuses on two statements that Barclays made in the letter, which Staley approved, that the executive director “had no close relationship” with Epstein and that his last contact with Epstein was “much before”, he joined Barclays in 2015.
FCA lawyers, led by Leigh-Ann Mulcahy KC, claim that the email cache between the two shows that statements in Barclays are incorrect.
The court heard that officials on the FCA and asked Higgins in an interview with 2021 Oe -Mailovi, including the one in which the banker described the relationship as “deep”.
Higgins told the officials that “it says what the Englishman is unusually cute e -mail’s many people.”
“Can you surely go through his e -hasty and find this type of intimate and attached style,” he added. “That’s the way it says.”
Staley’s legal team, led by Robert Smith KC, challenges the characterization of the fca relationship as “near”.
His lawyers claim that the authority was wrong to compare the contents of the e-mails between the two with Barclays FCA, whose real purpose was not to provide a comprehensive account of couple’s relationship, but simply secure FCA that neither Staley nor Barclays were included in EPSTEIN’s criminal behavior.
