The £100k-a-week Everton star is in talks to leave

Everton will hope David Moyes he can work his magic again in Merseyside and take the club from the bottom of the world Premier League table to the top half, maybe even take them back to Europe.

His first task at the Toffees will be to guide the club through the January transfer window, signing several quality players who can make a difference in their relegation battle, while also navigating some dead ends.

The latter aspect is perhaps more relevant. Moyes may not have a big budget to work with unless players are moved for transfers this month.

With several teams underperforming this term, the Scot could bring in some funds that will allow him to strengthen his squad in several areas.

According to TEAMtalk, The Friedkin Group is willing to back Moyes and the club are looking to bring a new winger and full-back to the club this month.

The two signings will certainly be welcome, but there have been recent reports of a potential move away from Goodison Park.

Ademolo Lookman’s numbers since leaving Everton

Lookman scored four goals in 48 appearances for the Toffees, although one came against Manchester City during a 4-0 win during the 2016/17 campaign.

After failing to score a single league goal in 2018/19, Lookman joined RB Leipzig for a a fee in the region of £22.5m that summer and it looked like some good work from Everton.

He struggled for the next few years until he moved to Atalanta in 2022, but under Gian Piero Gasperini the Nigerian international went from strength to strength.

He scored 15 goals and provided eight assists during his first season in Italy, before taking those figures to 17 and ten over the following year.

It was last season’s Europa League final that turned the continent on its head as Lookman scored a stunning treble that not only saw Atalanta lift the trophy but also ended Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten run.

Nine goals in 16 league games during 2024/25. it has put Atalanta in a formidable title challenge and there is no doubt that Lookman could be ready for the next step with a move to a bigger side in the near future.

This sequence of events could be repeated in some way, shape or form if a big-name player leaves Goodison this month.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has rejected offers to extend his contract at Everton, meaning he can leave Goodison for free at the end of the current season.

With this in mind, the club could reportedly sell him during the winter window to pocket a fee for the striker, helping to fund Moyes’ ambitions.

According to journalist Alan Nixon (via GIVEMESPORT) Atalanta are reportedly in talks with Calvert-Lewin to bring the player to Serie A this month.

Nixon states that a representative of the club from the Italian side was allegedly in Merseyside ready to secure a pre-contract agreement.

Gasperini is in the title race and that may suggest the manager could be tempted to bring the Englishman to Atalanta this month to bolster his attacking options.

Much will depend on how keen Moyes is to lose the striker, especially as he may need to find a replacement over the next few weeks.

However, if a decent offer comes in, it makes sense to take the money and run rather than lose Calvert-Lewin for nothing in just a few months, freeing up 100 thousand pounds a week in the process.

So is selling it actually a good idea?

It wasn’t that long ago when Calvert-Lewin was Everton’s talisman. Indeed, with the club battling relegation towards the end of the 2021/22 season, the forward scored against Crystal Palace in a 3-2 comeback win that saw the Toffees retain their top-flight status.

He was after the game hailed as a “hero” writer Adam Jones, scoring arguably the most important goal of his career and should have been the catalyst for his start.

Despite this, injury problems persisted as the Englishman missed a total of 21 Premier League games the following season, managing to find goal on only two occasions.

Things improved last season, scoring eight goals for the club as they managed to avoid relegation once again, but his luck seems to have run out, especially given how poor the striker was during the 2024/25 campaign.

Although his injury problems appear to have disappeared, Calvert-Lewin managed just two Premier League goals in 2024/25.

In these games, the Toffees frontman has target conversion rate of just 5%while averaging just 1.9 shots per game, creating one big chance while succeeding on just 35% of his dribble attempts.

While these stats make grim reading, a comparison with his peers in the Premier League position proves exactly why Everton must sell him for a fee this month.

Calvert-Lewin is located in bottom 10% for goals without penalties (0.13) and shot creation actions (1.24) per 90, while even ranking in the bottom 50% for total shots (2.41) and successful take-ons (0.46) per 90 in the Premier League this season.

These numbers are really bad. Sean Dyche may have stuck with the centre-forward, but Moyes may not be so forgiven, especially if he can bring in a replacement between now and the end of the transfer window.

A move away from the pressure cooker environment of the Premier League could be the best thing for Calver-Lewin.

If he continues to excel in Serie A with Atalanta, then Moyes may have repeated the club’s mistake of selling Lookman too hastily.

Judging by his numbers this season, the most logical thing to do is to move him. The next few weeks could be really interesting.
