Thailand holds his 1st same -sex weddings because the Law on a New Marriage comes into force
On Thursday, Thailand became the first state in Southeast Asia to hold legal same -sex weddings, with the 2SLGBTQ+ group marking the occasion with more than 1,000 marriage registrations in one day.
After the decades of campaign campaign, Thailand is the third territory in Asia, which has legalized the same -sex marriage after Taiwan and Nepal, and the new Law on Equality of Marriage entered into force on Thursday

2Slgbtq+ groups hope that 1,448 wedding registration of the first day, a symbolic number relating to the Thai Civil Code section, where the key amendment changed the words of husband and wife to “spouse”.
The organizers, together with related agencies, plan to compile figures from ceremonies throughout the country and submit a request to Guinness world records to recognize Thailand as the holder of the largest number of same -sex marriage registrations in one day.
“Those four four-oam symbolizes the struggle for marital rights for all sexes. It represents a dream and hope in the construction of an inclusive society that accepts and celebrates love in all its forms,” said 2slgbtq+ Group Bangkok Pride.
District offices throughout the country and Thai embassies abroad were also open to registration of marriage, the Government said.
“Equal marriage truly became possible by the power of all,” said former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who was premiered when considerable legislation passed last year.
The day labeled “close to the heart of many Thais.”
According to legal analysts, the new same -sex marriage law will create a larger momentum for larger 2SLGBTQ+ people in Thailand, which has long had the reputation of their carnival events and tolerance towards the community.
However, other regulations such as the construction of legally recognized families remain a challenge for some couples.
‘Ready to change’
Definition of family – the father is a man and mother of a woman – remains in Thai law law.
Organizer Bangkok Pride Adcharaporn Thonghalaem said that on Thursday, the rush for registration of marriages refers to recognition, not records.
“This event shows that many LGBT couples want this (marital) confirmation. It is a symbol that Thailand is ready to change towards equality. A same -pole marriage is only the first step,” Adcharaporn said.
