Team Cup: Tommy Fleetwood scores winning point as Great Britain and Ireland dominate Ryder Cup-style contest | Golf news

Tommy Fleetwood scored the winning point as Great Britain and Ireland completed a convincing Team Cup victory over continental Europe by dominating Sunday’s singles competition in Abu Dhabi.

Fleetwood secured the point that confirmed Team Europe’s 2023 victory in Rome and repeated the feat at this week’s Ryder Cup team event, played as part of the build-up ahead of September’s trip to Bethpage Black to face Team USA.

Justin Rose’s Great Britain and Ireland have won each of the opening three sessions to take a seven-point lead over Francesco Molinari’s continental European side, leaving them needing just two points from 10 matches on the final day to win the biennial competition.

Laurie Canter claimed the first singles point after beating Romain Langasque 5&4, ending the Frenchman’s 100 per cent record in the event, before Fleetwood took GB and Ireland to the 13 points they needed to win when he beat Matthieu Pavon 3&1 in the best match.
