Sunil Gavaskar disappointed as he was not invited to the Border-Gavaskar trophy presentation
A legend of Indian cricket Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment at not being invited to join Allan Border during the Border-Gavaskar trophy presentation ceremony. Australia won the series 3-1 after defeating India by six wickets at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Australia secured a historic series win
Australia finally got their hands on the coveted Border-Gavaskar trophy after a convincing 3-1 series win. Victory at the SCG marked the end of a 10-year drought for the Australians, who have not won the title since 2017. Pat Cummins he led his side to victory as they chased down the 162-run target with ease on the third day of the final Test.
However, while Allan Border was invited to present the trophy to Cummins, Sunil Gavaskar was left to handle media duties off the stage.
Gavaskar wanted to be a part of the presentation
Speaking to Code Sports, Gavaskar expressed his disappointment. “I would certainly like to be there for the presentation. After all, it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and it is about Australia and India,” he said.
Former Indian the captain clarified that the outcome of the series did not affect his desire to be a part of the moment. “They played better cricket, so they won. That’s fine. Just because I’m Indian doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be there. I would be happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border.”
A special connection with Allan Border
Gavaskar and Border share a long-standing friendship, dating back to the MCC’s bicentenary celebrations in 1987. During those matches, both legends played for the Rest of the World team against the MCC.
“I like AB (Boundary) a lot,” Gavaskar said in a previous interview with the Indian Express. “We got really close during that tour, traveling and playing games together. It was a wonderful experience.”
The cricket icon also expressed his pride that the series is named after him and Border. “I feel honoured, privileged and blessed that the series between India and Australia is named after us. Such an iconic series — it’s a blessing.”
Australia bounce back from early setback
Australia’s series victory was comprehensive, but it did not come without its challenges. India got off to a strong start by winning the first Test in Perth. However, the hosts hit back with a convincing 10-wicket victory in Adelaide’s pink-ball Test.
The third Test at the Gabba was interrupted by rain and ended in a draw. But Australia grabbed the key moments in Melbourne, sealing the series lead before wrapping things up in Sydney.
