Six Nations: Scotland call up Aleksander Masibak’s UP from France’s other side ahead of tournament opener | Rugby news

Australian-born Alexander Masibaka is one of five players called up to the Scotland squad ahead of this weekend’s Guinness Six Nations opener.

A back-row forward, Masibaka took the place of Josh Bayliss, who picked up a groin injury while playing for Bath against Sale. Bayliss will remain at his club for further damage assessment.

Euan Ferrie, Cameron Henderson, Ewan Johnson and Ollie Smith also joined the squad on Saturday ahead of Italy’s visit to Murrayfield on Saturday (2.15pm).

Masibaka was called up after impressing in the French second tier at Soyaux-Angouleme, where he is on loan from Montpellier.

The 23-year-old former Western Force player qualified for Scotland through his Paisley-born mother.

Versatile full-back Smith returns to the squad less than 24 hours after making his first Glasgow appearance in Sunday’s win over Connacht in 407 days. Smith’s return was for the Scottish side against Chile at the end of November.

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend is optimistic ahead of the Six Nations and says they will be “very competitive”.

Ferrie is not overcrowded, but the 23-year-old Glasgow Striker has previously trained with Gregor Townsend’s side.

Henderson made his debut for Scotland in 2023 against Italy before suffering a knee injury later that year. The 25-year-old lock earned a recall with some consistent displays for Leicester.

Oyonnax second-row forward Johnson won his first four caps last year and was also in November against Chile.
