Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy record so far: An outstanding achievement for his IPL franchise and home side
Shreyas Iyer recently re-emerged as a focal point of conversation Punjab Kings (PBKS) they named him captain of their team for the upcoming league season Indian Premier League (IPL). PBKS bought the 30-year-old for a whopping ₹26.75 crore in the last auction after his triumphant run of winning the prestigious league title with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
The Preity Zinta-owned franchise now hopes that with Iyer as the captain, their team will go from strength to strength in the season and win their first IPL glory.
Shreyas Iyer’s standout run as a skipper in the IPL
Iyer has established himself as a success IPL captain, leading in 71 games with 40 wins, 31 losses and a commendable winning percentage of 56.35. His leadership began with Capitals of Delhiwhere he captained the team from 2018 to 2020, leading them to their first IPL final in 2020 and achieving a win rate of 56.09% in 41 matches. He moved to KKR in the 2022 auction and quickly made an impact, leading the team to a third IPL title in just his third season, with a winning percentage of 56.70 in 30 matches. Interestingly, Iyer became the youngest IPL captain at 23 years and 142 days during the 2018 season. He also has the unique advantage of being the only captain to lead two different teams – Capitals 2020 and KKR 2024 – to the IPL final.

Iyer’s dream runs with Mumbai in the domestic circuit
Shreyas Iyer has been a prolific player in domestic cricket, showing his class in all formats. In first-class cricket, he played 80 matches, amassing 6335 runs at an impressive average of 49.10, including 15 centuries and 33 half-centuries, with a highest score of 233.
He played 149 matches in List A cricket, amassing 5909 runs with consistency and flair. His outstanding performances in the 2024 season were key to his team’s success. Shreyas led from the front to secure wins in the Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024, highlighting his comprehensive capabilities as a leader. With domestic success in 3 different competitions and an IPL title under his belt, Iyer has won 4 titles in the previous year as captain for his franchise and his domestic side.
