Newlands is one of the few grounds in South Africa that offers some help to spinners. However, things were very different in the last Test played at this venue. The match was played between South Africa and India in January last year.
Batting first, South Africa were bowled out for just 55 runs while India scored 153. In the second innings, South Africa scored 176 before India chased down the target of 79 runs with the loss of three wickets. The Pacers completely dominated the proceedings. Not a single spinner bowled a single over in that match.
The pitch was later rated ‘unsatisfactory’ by the ICC under the ICC’s on-pitch and off-pitch monitoring process. The conditions might be different this time and the spinners might make their presence felt in the upcoming match.
Conclusion:
The weather forecast is very promising for the upcoming SA vs PAK second test. Rain is very unlikely to play spoilsport during the match. With the conditions in Cape Town likely to be challenging for the batsmen, the upcoming match could also turn out to be an exciting contest.
