Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim admitted that the Red Devils must sell players in January before they can recruit new faces.
United have fallen to 14th in the Premier League table with just 22 points from 19 games, with many fans calling for a significant overhaul of the squad to avoid what Amorim admitted was likely to turn into “relegation battle“.
Unfortunately for those desperate fans, United they are already operating dangerously close to their profit and sustainability threshold and will not be able to invest in the team without first raising funds through sales.
“We don’t have that option [to buy] in January if we don’t take some players [out of the squad]”, Amorim admitted. “You know the situation better than I do. It’s not like I come here and I can spend money changing teams.”
Amorim has publicly expressed his concerns about the current squad’s suitability to his system, but he is unlikely to get many chances to add to his squad in January, not least because of the lack of desirable assets in the squad.
The recently reintegrated Marcus Rashford is a clear example of a potential sale, but his £40m price tag, coupled with his huge wages, will limit interest in January.
Casemiro has has recently been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia but it is unlikely to generate significant compensation, while Joshua Zirkzee reports that it does eager to stay and fight for his future despite Serie A’s interest.
They are united interested in the job of left-back Paris Saint-Germain Nun Mendeswho worked with Amorim at Sporting CP, but will not be able to afford the 22-year-old without a first significant sale.
